FolkEast has announced an exciting antipodean addition to the eclectic line-up for this month’s three-day festival at Suffolk’s Sotterley estate.
Hailing from New South Wales, We Mavericks will definitely have travelled further than any other act appearing this year at England’s most easterly folk festival.
Australian Lindsay Martin and New Zealander Victoria Vigenser will bring their intriguing, genre-hopping song set and skilled musicianship to the event’s new home near Beccles on the Saturday night (August 16).
While Auckland-born Victoria plays guitar and takes lead vocal, Lindsay dazzles on both violin and mandolin.
The enigmatic duo have been building their reputation in the UK in the last couple of years and stand out for their unflinching and highly original songs of life and love. Their sound has been variously described as contemporary folk, alt-country and acoustic-pop – whatever box it ticks, it never fails to connect.
Says festival co-director Becky Marshall-Potter: “We’re delighted that Victoria and Lindsay can join us for our first year at Sotterley whilst they are in the UK.”
The duo have been nominated for a string of awards including Artist of the Year and Best Contemporary Duo at the Australian Folk Music Awards. At FolkEast they will perform songs from their latest album Heart of Silver and debut album Grief’s a Gardener – songs that shift between grittiness and sensitivity, the lyrics full of resonating ‘everyman’ observations, fusing the heartfelt and humorous, the familiar and the curve ball.
Those songs have seen them on a rapid rise to big stages in both Australia and New Zealand – and now they are undoubtedly making their mark in the UK.
