Scottish electronic duo Valtos* are excited to announce their latest collaboration with the iconic Peatbog Faeries** on the upcoming single ‘Hò Rò’, set to be released today, October 25, 2024. This project marks a significant moment in their ongoing musical journey and serves as the final collaboration single in their Valtos & Friends project, highlighting the deep-rooted inspiration they draw from the renowned Skye band.
Valtos’ Martyn MacDonald and Daniel Docherty expressed their admiration for the Peatbog Faeries, stating: “The Peatbogs are childhood heroes of ours, having been trailblazing the Skye music scene for as long (and longer) than we can both remember, fusing a traditional sound with electronic music that we’ve taken much inspiration from. We always knew it would be a monster project but the opportunity to work with 8 of the most talented musicians we know was fantastic.”
The creative process began with an idea in early 2023 and took over a year and a half to complete. The resulting track showcases a harmonious blend of both bands’ styles, introducing elements they have never worked with before, such as a live grand piano and a saxophone. Remarkably, the song was recorded both in-person and virtually, with some band members not meeting face-to-face at all during the recording sessions.
An unexpected twist occurred when bassist Innes Hutton entered the studio with a mandola, which quickly became a fundamental hook in the track. “We only had five minutes to record it as our studio time was up, but as soon as we heard it, we knew we had to build the track around it,” said MacDonald.
In a nod to tradition and musical heritage, the single also features a sample of Fergie MacDonald, paying homage to both the esteemed musician and to Valtos’ remix of the Peatbog Faeries’ track “Marx Terrace,” which features the distinctive voice of the Ceilidh King.
