As celebrated singer songwriter Steve Knightley sets off on the second leg of his 35-date tour showcasing his first solo album in 17 years, The Winter Yards, he has unveiled a new video of the inspired opening track Transactions.
The formidable frontman of folk roots legends Show of Hands has long been applauded for his savvy, ‘on the money’ songwriting – and his awards include BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards coveted Best Original Song gong for his biting attack on the banking ‘suits’ – Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed.
Transactions shows his songwriting remains as sharp as ever as it delves into three significant issues of our time – firstly, the need for controlled immigration to sustain our economy as our population ages; secondly, the confusion and challenges young people face as they navigate their identities and sexualities and finally, the heart-breaking story of the Post Office scandal, where countless innocent employees were wrongly accused and persecuted.
Says Steve: “These are the ‘transactions’ of our society, each with its own narrative and consequence.”
With Steve on tenor guitar and vocals, the track also features Johnny Kalsi on tablas, Matt Clifford on keys, Amie Parsons and Chloe Payne (aka True Foxes) on backing vocals and album producer Mark Tucker lending a hand on drums, bass and percussion.
“Knightley dares to tackle subjects other songwriters leave well alone – his best songs are bleak, witty and finely observed” – The Guardian
