Singer / Songwriter Ewan MacPherson reveals new project Hushman

Nov 21, 2022

Hushman is the new project from renowned folk musician, singer & songwriter Ewan MacPherson. Although he has family ties to Scotland, Ireland and Wales, Ewan is originally from Liverpool where he graduated from the Paul McCartney-founded Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts. He located to Edinburgh in 1999 where he is now a recongised figure on the vibrant Scottish music scene, performing and writing with Scottish Indie folk band Salt House & Scottish Acid folk legends, Shooglenifty, amongst others.

Hushman is the self-titled debut,  which was released on Hudson Records on the 18th November. The next single due for release from the album is ‘She Climbs the Munros’  which Ewan wrote for his wife, Lauren MacColl, for their small ‘lockdown’ wedding in 2021. The beautiful, dreamy song about her love of climbing mountains – or ‘munros’ as they are often called in Scotland – is captured perfectly in the new video using 8mm film as we see Lauren walking high up in the Cairngorm mountains, the wilderness and sheer beauty of the landscape a foil for the earnest yet ethereal feel of the song.

The exquisitely crafted songs on ‘Hushman’ are imbued with the sparse backdrop of the Scottish Highlands; the thin walls of the cabin where they were recorded, the lashing rain and howling gales captured beautifully in a set of rich, introspective, indie-folk songs. Likened to Ben Howard, John Martyn and Nick Drake, MacPherson’s songwriting is honest and reflective with his earthy, delicate voice underpinning his eight self-penned songs and arrangements of two traditional songs (‘Duke Henrik’ and ‘Beltane’).

For his Hushman project, Ewan MacPherson, on vocals, guitars, harmonium, bowed bouzouki, jaw harp and synths is joined by label mates Hannah Read on backing vocals, Lauren MacColl (Rant, Heal & Harrow) on strings, Ben Nichols (Seth Lakeman, Nadine Shah) on Bass and James Mackintosh (Shooglenifty, Capercaillie) on percussion.

Hushman was released on Hudson Records on 18th November and is available on CD, LP, Limited Edition Blue vinyl and from all usual digital outlets.
