Singer, songwriter and activist for many fine causes, though in particular the natural order of things, Alice Di Micele offers up another album’s worth of brain food for the dubious and positivism for those already on side. With ‘Reverse The Flow’ she’s as committed as ever yet doesn’t easily sit in any real musical genre, maybe a square peg in a round hole, but when the melodic trappings here include, folk, jazz and blues then the lady’s not so easily defined and that’s healthy.
In reality what matters here is the inspiration and the ideal that really we should all feel guilty about the way we treat anything or anyone we don’t understand. Understanding after all leads to action and questioning, information, attitude, ideas take your pick. Alice asks but little of the world just fairness and common sense. Her songs a beacon of hope in these confusing and troubled times.
At just nine songs in length this never falls to simply preaching or handing out polemics rather she lets her music do the job for her. All helped by a very flexible vocal and a crack band and quality guests like Darol Anger on fiddle and Skip Edwards keyboards. The musical palette is broad, ‘Falling Through The Cracks,’ is a sturdy thing with a deal of heft, a lyric for all those who find life a trial, whilst ‘Oh Humanity,’ is a hymn laden with regret about the wrongs of the human animal. “Look around this crazy world nothing makes sense,” she sings, a sentiment echoed often as the album plays. Well that maybe so, you’d be hard pushed to argue, but at least Alice Di Micele’s world view offers hope and better times ahead. “This body’s more than good enough,” she attests. I believe her. More power to her says I.
