The album comes out on 23 January, it’s worth quoting the press release on the albums genesis:
“People say that a UK artist can never compete with anything that’s coming out of Nashville, but this record dares to say different,” argues Kezia. “It’s Nashville players with a Nashville production. I’m proudly British, but All On Red is the best of both worlds. You can hear in my voice just what it meant to be in a room full of seasoned Nashville musicians, all fully committed to bringing my music to life. I knew that room was where I was always meant to be.”
Little wonder Kezia felt so at home as she cut her teeth in the storied home of country. Her rootsy music reflects a rich Celtic heritage – it’s the irrefutable link to All On Red’s compelling truth. Surrounded by a musical family of Irish descent, Kezia felt instantly connected to the folksy, fiddle-led sounds that first crossed the Atlantic with 18th century settlers and laid the foundation for country music. All On Red feels like a full circle moment for a flame-haired firebrand always destined to take on Nashville… and win.
When Kezia took a call from acclaimed singer, songwriter and producer Alyssa Bonagura – in the autumn of 2024 – offering her the opportunity to record at Sound Emporium Studios on Belmont Boulevard, Nashville, she felt compelled to seize the day.
“Alyssa said it felt like the stars were aligning,” recalls Kezia. “She suddenly had a free week and said, ‘I’ve called the studio and spoken to the guys – everyone’s free if you can get here’. I booked the flights to Tennessee the next day.”
What followed was the kind of magic only Music City can conjure. Kezia, Alyssa and a tried and tested Tennessee crew cut seven songs in one session. The intensity, passion and urgency in Kezia’s vocals reflect the crackling energy in the room that day.
“We’d only finished writing a day or two before we arrived at Sound Emporium so Alyssa and I played the songs on guitar while one of the guys, Sam, furiously charted them out,” she recalls. “He used the Nashville number system and started speaking this language that I didn’t even understand! He was telling the other guys in the room ‘there’s a diamond there and there’s a stop there and then we do a double repeat there’.
“Then we all went into the studio and the one thing I’m super grateful for is that my voice was on point that day. I was absolutely blown away and extremely humbled by the calibre of talent that was in that room making my record. It was a day I’ll never forget.”
Kezia and Alyssa had connected at the previous year’s Black Deer festival in the UK. Chatting over a drink in the artists’ beer tent, two like-minded souls instantly clicked.
“I told Alyssa that I’d love to send her some demos and she stopped me right there,” adds Kezia. “She said, ‘I don’t even need to hear the demos. I want to make your record’.”
