GRAMMY® Artist to Watch Kashus Culpepper has released Act I, his debut full-length album. The 18-track record brings together elements of Americana, soul, blues, and Southern rock, reflecting both his Alabama roots and a broad range of musical influences.
Ahead of its release, Culpepper attracted attention from established artists and media outlets. Elton John described his sound as reminiscent of “Bill Withers making country music,” while John Mayer referred to him as “as good as it gets.” Rolling Stone identified 2026 as a potential breakthrough year for the Alabama-born artist, while Paste noted that Culpepper’s debut does not sound like the work of a new artist. Additional coverage from Nashville Lifestyles and Parade positioned Act I among the year’s notable country releases.
Musically, the album explores a range of styles and themes. Tracks such as “Break Me Like” and “Alabama Beauty Queen” lean into soul-influenced arrangements, with the latter referencing Culpepper’s hometown. “Cherry Rose” is built around piano and reflects on working life and dissatisfaction, while “In Her Eyes” incorporates blues-derived guitar techniques and moves into psychedelic rock territory. “Broken Wing Bird” features a guest appearance from Sierra Ferrell, with both artists sharing vocal duties over a stripped-back arrangement.
Act I was recorded at Ivy Manor Studio, a location closely associated with the region’s soul and rock recording history. Culpepper has cited Muscle Shoals’ musical legacy as a factor in shaping the album’s sound, which blends country, soul, and blues influences.
In support of the release, Culpepper is scheduled to perform headline shows in cities including New York, Boston, and Nashville, alongside international dates in Australia with Wyatt Flores and support slots for Eric Church.
