Folk by the Oak Festival Unveil Exciting New Look for 2024

Mar 7, 2024

Folk by the Oak Festival unveil exciting new look to complement their incredible line-up!

Billed as an uplifting, family friendly festival with 13 acts across their 2 stages, Folk by the Oak has been hosting an annual 1-day festival of back-to-back live music in their leafy, tree-lined arena in Hatfield Park, Hertfordshire since 2008. The festival returns on Sunday 21 July, this year with an exciting new look thanks to a creative partnership with designer and long-time festival stallholder Sarah Braithwaite of The Foundling’s Future. (pictured below)

Sarah first joined the many makers and creators in Folk by the Oak’s Craft Tent in 2015, immediately catching the eye of festival organiser Caroline Slough, who fell in love with Sarah’s colourful, striking, nature led designs. Inspired to commission Sarah to create banners for the festival’s second stage, the Acorn Stage, Caroline tells us Sarah’s first stage banner design was the one we used! What a joy it was to find someone so creative, who instinctively knew what would appeal not only to us but also our wonderful audience. Her artworks are like stories waiting to be told or imagined. The woodland creatures have a sense of fun and mischief alongside a streak of carefree wildness.”

Each year something new was commissioned– whether it was the beautiful landscape designs used in their online festival during lockdown – Family Nest Fest – or the addition of stunning festival posters and T-Shirts to the merch desk, it was all leading one way… to an entire Festival rebrand, led by Sarah’s incredible designs and unveiled by the festival today.

Caroline says of the new festival artwork “Sarah’s new rebrand designs use elements from the rich back catalogue of previous years’ artwork as well as the new 2024 festival poster. Our new look is rooted in the playful Folk by the Oak characters that Sarah, the festival team and our Folk by the Oakers have come to know and love!”

On working with Folk by the Oak, Sarah tells us “This was a really enjoyable experience as I feel we are all aligned in our creative vision. Illustrating new characters and motifs for the artworks is an exciting challenge, as they need to be able to merge with the existing woodland world we have created, while also being able to move everything along a little bit each time. I design with the intent that the anticipated artwork will bring its own element of surprise and newness. It is always a joy when people tell me at the festival that they have one of the posters framed on their wall, it’s a wonderful compliment.”

Sarah also designs and creates under her brand ‘The Foundling’s Future’, which focuses on utilising distinctive and unusual fabrics already in existence to create something new and useful. Each piece is a one-off that includes items such as bags, pouches, hand printed cards and art prints, all of which can be found on her ever-popular Craft Tent stall at Folk by the Oak.

Folk by the Oak’s line-up of 13 bands is also hitting all the high notes. Iconic band Levellers will headline the Main Stage with a high energy set packed with their most loved tracks, plus superb indie-folk band The Staves, kora master Seckou Keita with his new collaboration ‘Homeland Band’ and the exceptional Boston based Darlingside, plus more Main Stage acts. Over on the Acorn Stage, Essex legend Beans on Toast will headline a superb line-up of bands including the funky all female Scottish band Heisk and the wonderful London Youth Folk Ensemble.
