The focus is on creating a space where the community can come together to enjoy live music without barriers. Finding accessible venues for live music in Norwich can be challenging, with many spaces located upstairs. Yalm is different – fully accessible with a lift for those who need it, ensuring everyone can enjoy the performances. The event also supports local independent restaurants, with two different eateries providing the menu each night, offering a chance to taste something new with every visit. It’s about celebrating both music and food in an atmosphere that’s relaxed, inclusive, and deeply supportive of the folk scene.
The communal tables at Folk at Yalm have helped create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, where solo ticket buyers can feel at ease and connect with others. So far, we’ve seen many people attend on their own, only to leave with new friends and a sense of community. The shared space fosters conversation and camaraderie, making each concert not just a musical experience but a chance to meet like-minded folk music enthusiasts. It’s this spirit of connection that makes Folk at Yalm not only about the music but also about building relationships and strengthening the local community.
The location of Norwich can often make it difficult for artists to afford to play here. Many touring musicians face the challenge of not being able to cover venue hire fees, and while Norwich is home to some wonderful arts spaces, these spaces can sometimes struggle to program artists on tour. Folk at Yalm seeks to address this gap by offering live music on Monday nights, usually the first Monday of each month. This timing is often ideal for artists looking to fill a night during their tour that might otherwise be more challenging to book. By offering a low-risk platform, with sound provided by fellow Shackleton Trio member and sound engineer Aaren Bennett, we can provide artists with what we hope is a comfortable gig, in a relaxed and intimate setting. For the folk-loving community in Norwich, this means the chance to see world-class acts in the stunning Royal Arcade, while supporting artists in a way that’s sustainable and mutually beneficial.
As one of the most exciting new indie-folk duos to come out of the UK, ‘Good Habits’ award winning, genre-fusion has received international critical acclaim in the short 5 years they have been performing, with performances at Glastonbury and WOMAD; tours throughout Europe and Australasia; and a Top 40 album.
Composed of Bonnie Schwarz (cello + vocals) and Pete Shaw (accordion), the pair mix virtuosic musicianship and vocal harmony with vivid storytelling, drawing on their diverse musical tastes and weaving them into an action-packed narrative of folky goodness. After a pandemic spent happily stranded in New Zealand, they arrived back in the UK in 2022 to spread their joyous music throughout Europe.
Show of Hands founder, Phil Beer will perform on 12th May, followed by Jackie Oates on 2nd June.
