Blue Rose Code Upcoming Album Bright Circumstance

Apr 24, 2024

Blue Rose Code is a band led by Edinburgh-born, Liverpool-based singer-songwriter Ross Wilson.

Their music has been described as having “almost religious intensity and sincerity. Wilson makes widescreen soul in the spirit of Van Morrison” (The Times)

Their previous albums include With Healing Of The Greatest Kind(2020), The Water of Leith(2017), The Ballads of Peckham Rye(2014) and most recently, 2023’s reflective compilation, Ten Years Grace.

Wilson’s career has seen him work with the great Danny Thompson, Eddi Reader, and most recently, co write with English folk royalty Steve Knightley and Blue Rose Code’s records have featured Karine Polwart, Ewan McGregor, and Nashville Gospel legends, The McCrary Sisters, along with some of the UK’s finest jazz Musicians.

Wilson has opened for Van Morrison, toured with The Proclaimers, Deacon Blue, and Blue Rose Code have been featured live on TV and Radio as well as his songs being used in the French prime times how , Cherif, as wel l as Hollyoaks and feature length film, The Low Road.

Last summer saw the band play main stages at Cambridge Folk Festival, Shrewsbury and Tønder in Denmark, and Black Deer.

The experience of playing to the big crowds with the big band has developed the Blue Rose Code sound into an unmissable live event and that energy has been taken into the studio for Bright Circumstance their upcoming album, out on the 10th May.

The new album, is the summation of over a decade of releasing music ,and the overcoming of personal struggle. Written over the last eighteen months between Galson in the Isle of  Lewis, the Whitstable  seafront, and his new home of Liverpool, Bright Circumstance ha s an undeniable spirit of redemption, of a love and compassion that permeates the album.

Bright Circumstance

Forthright in the admission of his past struggles with alcoholism and addiction, Ross Wilson’s startling vulnerability and honest lyricism  shines a bright light upon his  truth and offers it to others.

In the four years since his last release, and now supported by a seven piece live band comprising of expert jazz players, Wilson has developed further his acclaimed blend of Caledonian Soul, Folk and Americana.

This expanded sound elevates the album’s biggest moments, and deepens the impact of its more poignant passages. This is clear in the triumphant reverence of ‘Never Know Why, where Ross reminds us “don’t deny yourself the light inside yourself” – echoed again in jubilant opener ‘Jericho’ as he insists “It’s been a long time coming but now I know your love and mercy.

Originally released in collaboration with Scottish charity Children 1st ,‘Thirteen Years’ rages against a policy of authority that causes and perpetuates child poverty, and the spiritual musing of ‘Don’t Be Afraid’, in its closing moments, feels like a rapture of knowledge and understanding.

Speaking about the meaning behind Bright Circumstance, Ross Wilson shares ,“The title comes from a moment in meditation when the kalyana-mitta talked about being aware of now, of being present, of ‘this bright circumstance’. I’d been struggling for weeks to come up with a title that would evoke what the record is about It’s about joie de vivre, it’s about trials and travails, it’s about the gamut of experience, one day at a time, this Bright Circumstance.”

Wilson and the band are bringing Bright Circumstance to the stage from next month.

Dates as follows:

Bright Circumstance is out on CD, vinyl and digitally on May 10th
